Taking a look at domestic violence statistics

When it comes to domestic violence, both accusers and the accused may face a number of challenges. In Lee County, and across Florida, there are an alarming number of domestic violence victims and it is crucial for people in this position to receive the justice they deserve. At the same time, many people have also been accused of a violent act they never committed, throwing their world into turmoil over false allegations.

On their website, the Department of Children and Families states that more than 15,000 people were provided residential domestic violence services in Florida between July 2010 and June 2011 (new admissions). Among these people, more than 8,000 were women, 7,486 were children and 78 were men. Over the same period of time, more than 40,000 people were provided non-residential domestic violence services.

In addition to physical abuse, it is important to remember that acts of violence against family members take other forms, such as verbal abuse, sexual abuse and even financial abuse. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 20 people in the U.S. experience intimate partner violence at the hands of their partner each minute, on average.

For those who experience domestic violence firsthand, taking action may seem daunting. Some people are unsure of which steps to take or are worried about the potential consequences of speaking out. After all, some victims are hesitant to hold a family member accountable for their actions and worry about the impact it may have on their family. However, it is important for Floridians to address domestic violence right away.
