Give yourself a chance at effective child custody negotiations

Once you and your spouse make the decision to pursue a divorce in the state of Florida, you will immediately need to begin making critical decisions about your future. If you and your soon-to-be ex have had children together, these decisions may become more complicated and require considerable time and thought to reach a beneficial solution. At Fried and Fried, P.A. we are familiar with the hurdles that many couples must face when working through a divorce.

When the time comes to begin discussing child custody and preparing for evaluations to take place, there are things you can do to prepare for an effective discussion. Psychology Today has three valuable suggestions to consider as you enter negotiations for child custody. Here are some of the things you may wish to remember:

  • Leave room for change: Depending on the circumstances surrounding your divorce and the agreements that you and your spouse reach regarding the care of your children, you may wish to amend or modify your agreement in the future. Because of this possibility, it is important that you leave room for changes and remain watchful of the rules you propose in the original documents.
  • Be cordial and objective: During child custody negotiations, it can be easy to paint a picture of your ex that presents him or her in a negative light. However, this kind of behavior may only complicate matters further and if you are found to be lying, your chances of gaining anything are put at risk.
  • Do not forget your children: Remember that the ultimate goal is to provide a childhood for your children that is as normal and happy as can be. This may require you to compromise and make decisions that are not easy at times in an attempt to do what is best for your children.

By incorporating these actions into your preparation for negotiating during a child custody evaluation, you may heighten your chances of having an effective outcome and reaching a beneficial solution. For more information about child custody, visit our web page.
