What does a restraining order protect you from?

If you are in a volatile relationship where your safety is at risk because your partner is threatening you, a restraining order may be something you have considered. Getting a restraining order in Florida can be a valuable tool in giving you some peace of mind, an added measure of protection and an extended opportunity to depart from a toxic relationship.

Before you begin the process of filing for a restraining order, it may be helpful to familiarize yourself with the protections you may be provided. According to LiveAbout, some of the purposes of a restraining order include the following:

  • A judge may look at your case and require your abuser to undergo a professional counseling or treatment program in conjunction with the restraining order.
  • A judge may require your abuser to be escorted by authorities should he or she need to return to your home to retrieve personal belongings.
  • Your abuser will not be allowed to have any contact with you. This provision may be extended to cover other people who you feel may be at risk as well.
  • You may be awarded temporary custody of any children you share with your abuser. Depending on your situation, the custody arrangement could be permanent.
  • Your abuser may be required to pay for any medical costs or other consequences that you are suffering as the result of abuse that you have been the victim of.
  • A judge may require that your abuser permanently leave the residence you have shared.
