Collaborative law lessen the emotional effect of divorce

The emotional effect of just thinking about getting a divorce can be crushing for some people, and then actually initiating the legal proceedings can be a whole different emotional gut-punch. Simply put, a divorce can be an emotional rollercoaster, as one recent news article pointed out.

In the recent article, several points about the emotions that come up in a divorce were discussed. When a divorce becomes seemingly inevitable, some people think, "Maybe I didn't try hard enough." Others think, "Maybe I should have made more compromises." The "ifs" and "buts" can be enough to cause any Florida resident to think about whether or not it is even worth the emotional turmoil to go through a divorce.

But, there are ways to attempt to lessen the emotional effect of a divorce. For example, if there is even the slightest agreement between the divorcing spouses that, yes, divorce is the best thing to end the relationship, then perhaps, a collaborative law approach to the divorce is possible. In this type of approach to divorce, the soon-to-be ex-spouses are encouraged to be cordial and respectful to one another as they work through the various legal issues that need to be addressed in the divorce case. Mediation, in which a neutral third-party goes back and forth between the parties to discuss options and potentially creative approaches to thorny issues, can be useful.

As the recent article noted, sometimes, it can be hard for any given person to come to terms with the fact that perhaps, it is time for their marriage to end. However, if divorcing couples in Florida are able to focus on the legal issues and attempt to put emotions aside -- to the best of their abilities -- a collaborative law approach may ease the emotional effect of a divorce.
