You may want to put off divorce until after Christmas

On Behalf of | Nov 25, 2015 | High Asset Divorce |

If you’re thinking about getting divorced in Florida, you may want to hold off until the holiday season ends. Of course, you should never wait if your safety is jeopardized in any way, but, if you can pick and choose when to split up, there are some good reasons to get through the holidays first.

1. Bonuses may be coming.

Bonuses are usually given out around this time. If your spouse is in line for a large bonus, waiting could mean you can claim some of it in the divorce, whereas splitting up before the bonus is paid means it all goes to your spouse.

2. It’s not good to rush.

This is a huge decision. The holidays can be fun, but they can also be a whirlwind. You may be extra stressed. This can all cause you to rush through a divorce when it’s better to slow down and think through each step.

3. A clear tax timeline.

Taxes can play a part in divorce, so waiting until the next year gives you a clear timeline for taxes owed and paid. This can make the paperwork simpler than if you file right before the new year.

4. Avoiding emotional decisions.

If you’re feeling extra emotional around the holidays already, a divorce could push you even farther. Some people make emotional decisions that are dangerous, such as drinking too much, spending money recklessly or overeating.

At the end of the day, you have to decide when the right time to divorce is for you alone. Whenever that is, be sure you understand the entire legal process.
